July 3rd, 2024 New Jersey/Delaware Bay Fishing Report with Jim Hutchinson, Jr.
A day earlier than normal as we celebrate the Fourth of July on a Thursday, giving some access to a four-day weekend for quality fishing time in the New Jersey, Delaware Bay region. Black sea bass (one fish, 12-1/2 inches) is back in play for July and August, a nice addition to a box full of fluke. A look at the weather and tides this week, followed by a look at surf fluke tips (3:45) from the July edition and in Jenni's Open Boat (4:45) as well. Head back (10:25) in Jersey Shore history with a look at the "marine life bites" of 1916 and learn about new efforts to tackle the beach shark problem in the Garden State. Get a quick look at the weather for the next few days (13:35) and some "fresh" ideas for escaping the coastal crowds (15:00) from the Pines to the Poconos. Additional Fourth of July surf options (18:15) include cow-nosed rays, kingfish, spot and yes, sea robins, a rather tasty summer surprise. Ling of red hake have been plentiful (20:40) which is about as good as it gets when simply smoked. Finally this week an Independence Day message from 248 years ago this week (21:50) and a special Manhattan Cup award presentation from the docks at Belmar.

You have to love it when 'The Fourth' falls on a Thursday because that means a 4-day weekend for many of us; which translates to lots of extra fishing time! But even if you have to work on Friday, don't despair, there are tons of fishing options for whatever days you have off this weekend. The best striper fishing is spread between Boston and Downeast Maine, where fish from slots to slobs are b...

Fluking through the 4th might be the slogan of the week since the hot fluke bite continued in the South Shore bays once again. The bite has been better on the inside as opposed to the ocean. Striper fishing also continues to be excellent on the North Shore and now the East End of the island, evident by the good run of fish in Montauk and recent reports from the Gut and Race. Porgies are loaded ...

You know, 15 years ago jumbo stripers like the one featured in our video cover image this week were about the most targeted Jersey Shore species at this late point in the month of June. In fact in the early 2000s the bunker busting bass action was probably hottest between Father's Day and the Fourth of July. As we head into the final weekend of June, there are still a few jumbos in the mix (tha...

The last couple of weeks it's been the North Shore and now it's the South Shore's turn to give up some good fluking. All of the bays are seeing increased production with quantity as well as quality in the last week. Not much word on the striper bite on the outside since the wind picked up in the region. We did know of good tuna fishing right before it did, south of Montauk and Block. When it se...

In spite of the winds, fluke hunters saw a marked improvement at the Nantucket Shoals this week, and with Rhode Island anglers calling the fluke fishing 'the best in five years', we're in a pretty good place for this popular species. Tuna bites continue to go strong with a good showing of rec-sized bluefin east of the Cape and south of Block. And finally, your best bets for large stripers are w...

Hey Jennie how about showing what you take on the beach when you go flounder fishing off the surf.
great vid
Great job Reinaldo!!!
Happy 4th everyone.
@@lovesbeer9973 loves beer that's a good one.have a cold one for me. happy 4th.
Great report Jim!
Happy 4th of July my Fishermen Friends! Catch 'em up!!
Congrats Jim Amen- God Bless the USA
How do you target one species of shark over another short of spotting it and dropping the bait on its head? It's all the same baits and rigs. Catching any shark is incidental at best 99% of the time.
CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN JIM!
10 days more of south wind!? 😫
“Marine Life Bite”!? Omg lolol
Lolololol!!! Too awesome!
Saw several guys get tickets in March, putting stripers in the box on the nj side of the raritan then crossing that ny line before the ny season opens up.
Summer 24 no reels out yet. Post I cast 24? Ready for fall run?
When are the 8k dropping
What would you recommend for lbi surf fishing this week? I’ve been using cut bunker, sp minnows, diamond jigs, swim shads and more for hours today and yesterday and no bites so far.. im using a 10 foot penn squadron with a diawa bg 4000.
Personally, I'd follow Jenni's recommendation in lightening up right now for fluke in the wash (bucktails or jigs tipped with Gulp or FishBites). See if this helps www.thefisherman.com/area/new-jersey-delaware-bay-surf/ -JH
👍👍

FINALLY! I had been using the double uni-knot for fluoro to braid but was not happy with the performance. The braid appeared to cut into the fluoro and cause the knot to fail. So I went looking for another knot. I've watched at least a dozen videos (and tried all the "best and easiest fluoro to braid knots" in them) over the past several days. NONE of the knots have worked with my river smallie rig: 30 lb braid to 10 lb fluoro. I tried the Alberto, Improved Albright, Yucatan, Double-Uni, and FG knots, among others. None worked as advertised, OR were as easy to tie as the videos made them look. Apparently, there's some special trick one must perform during the tightening process that all the other narration-less videos are incapable of explaining. When asked for help by multiple viewers, one guy could only advise them to "watch the video over and over and practice until you get it." WTF? Thank you for a clear and thorough explanation of this knot! I especially like that the tiny trimmed end of the mono is on the BACK side of the knot when casting. That should improve castability. Looking forward to seeing how it performs next time out! If you don't hear back from me, it did the job.
..so where are the porgies at ?
Can you catch sheepshead from shore? Off of jetty’s ect it seem like the only people that get them is kayak.
Yes, there are several piers (public and private) in Cape May County waters in particular that are quite productive. -JH
You need a bigger whip finisher!
I'm about ready to sell both my boats and take up Golf full time. Anglers are getting Pounded! Wish they spent as much time finding out who's really benefiting from these Windmills and Foreign companies tax breaks.
Are baby blues (snappers) in season yet?
Snappers are bluefish…
The porgy fishing below Port Jefferson has been generally lousy , very few keepers around..even in the party boats from City Island has been bad with very few keepers around.., hopefully it'll get better...
Any report of trigger fish?
The SeaBass pause is idiotic.Rally your member to stop the stupidity
Incredibly cool Steiger craft! What a great collaboration with The Fisherman Magazine!
Thanks as always for the updates and thanks Rich for the water temps and weather it’s appreciated! Feel better! 💪🏽😎🇺🇸

They dont stay on the hook.
That tog video is wild! And you said he and the bluefish made an agreement to split it lolololol!
Thats Big Hound Fish, Jim!
Appreciate the reports jim. Been watching your reports since I was in middle school. Nice to see the red drum making a comeback.
My grandfather worked Four summers 1930-1934 the next bay southeast of elfin cove at the old fish cannery at port Althorp! And I still am here in southeast Alaska! No place like it!😉👍
No place like our Alaska! Real simple!😉👍
Now it won’t cast right.
Please give us someone pretty to look at.
Hi Jim. I’m going to be at the Indian river inlet near that beach club this weekend what are people catching and with what baits thanks for the help
Look for the July edition of The Fisherman Magazine out this week, there's a great little feature from Eric Burnley that might be of help - here's a link to the online version of that story www.thefisherman.com/article/1st-state-summer-surf-surfcasting-the-delaware-coast/
Wait, what? You toss the lure up-tide and just let it drift down on the bottom?
I've been watching every Steiger craft video on UA-cam recently thank you for posting this
Egg sinker right down to the hook or with a leader and swivel as a stop?
Another awesome Steiger product! Hey is Alan's hat available for purchase?
Who cares?
Literally nobody
What's anyone catching off Green Island Pier in Wantagh? Worth trying top water plugs or stick with fluke? Looking for the bite when passing time away
What was the final cost ?
What is the protocol if you catch a tagged fish?
Whether it's a streamer tag (Gray Fishtag Research, Berkeley Striper Club, or perhaps ALS) or the MiniPAT tag, get the specifics of fishing location, size of shape (length and girth) and contact the number on the tag. In the case of GrayFishtag Research you can call them at 844.824.8353 or log your recapture here grayfishtagresearch.org/log-your-recovery
Keep the findings on migration quite. Dont need the Chinese fishing fleet wiping them out
Not much reporting on the porgies , some plainly skipped it !!!
Exceptional boat and fabulous video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
That is my aunts uncle of the first one
